Named for prominent agriculturist Nathan Meeker, it serves as Rio Blanco’s county seat and was home to the Ute people before the arrival of European settlers.

Meeker’s land area spanning 3.51 square miles is home to 2,295 permanent residents. It is located around 154 miles west of Denver. Those who live here enjoy their peace and privacy, and yet never feel isolated – community events and festivals provide plenty of opportunities to meet new people and build lasting friendships.

  • Flat Tops Wilderness
    This vast area spans 235,214 acres and is Colorado’s second largest wilderness. Hike along 160 miles of trails, swim in over 110 glimmering lakes and ponds, and catch trout in more than 100 miles of sparkling streams.One of the highlights of the wilderness is a skeletal forest of dead fir and spruce trees perched on top of the higher slopes just below the alpine tundra, a reminder of the bark beetle epidemic of the 1940s.

  • Meekerpalooza Arts & Music Festival
    This annual festival features locals showcasing their talent in dance, music, singing, and culinary and visual arts. Activities include the Park to Art Race and Cornhole Tournament.
  • Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials
    A long running Meeker tradition, this five-day sheepdog herding tournament takes place in September of each year.
  • Nine Mile Guest Ranch
    Hunt big game in Meeker. The ranch offers archery, rifle elk hunting, mule deer hunting, and pronghorn antelope hunts.
